Create a laboratory referral on a consultation to order laboratory tests for a patient.
Laboratory tests are saved as laboratory items in Vetera. There are two types of laboratory items: laboratory analyses and laboratory analysis panels. A laboratory analysis often represents one test or value within a panel. You use these laboratory items to create a laboratory referral on a consultation. You can then add the laboratory results, remarks, and attachments for the sample to the referral.
With a Vetera laboratory integration, you can send laboratory referrals with the patient information automatically to in-house equipment or to the reference laboratory that receives the sample. With a two-way integration, the results are uploaded to the laboratory referral automatically when the sample has been processed. Read more about laboratory integrations.
Note: A new consultation page is being introduced. You can switch between the two versions from the top of the consultation page. This article covers both versions.
Create a Laboratory Referral on a Consultation
Create a laboratory referral from the Laboratory section of the patient's consultation page. You can add laboratory analyses, laboratory analysis panels, or both to one referral.
Note: You can only create a laboratory referral on an open consultation. It is not possible to add a laboratory referral after the consultation has been finalized or the invoice has been paid.
To create a laboratory referral:
On the patient's consultation page, open the laboratory dialog:
New consultation page: in the Laboratory section, select + Add lab test. The Add new lab test dialog opens.
Old consultation page: go to the Laboratory section and select the plus button next to the section title. The Laboratory analyses / panels dialog opens.
If you want to add a planned time for the test, select a date and time from the calendar in the Planned time field.
Find the laboratory analysis or panel you want to order. You can filter the list using the Laboratory group and Subgroup filters or use the search field to search for items by name or code. If favorites are in use, select Favorites to show the frequently used laboratory items marked as favorites in the item settings.
Select the plus button to add the analysis or panel. You can add multiple analyses or panels to the same referral. The items appear under Selected laboratories and panels.
In the Referral remarks field, you can add remarks to the referral.
If label printing is in use, you can print a laboratory label for the referral.
If you want to create a task for one or more users, select them in the task field:
New consultation page: select the users in the Manually create task drop-down list. They get a task when the referral is marked complete.
Old consultation page: use the Create tasks field.
Depending on the clinic location settings, this field may be required. When the laboratory results are ready, Vetera may also create a task for the referring veterinarian or for other users set in the clinic location settings.
Depending on the clinic location settings, the Mark referral as urgent option may be available. If your clinic uses a laboratory urgency fee, the fee is selected by default when you mark the referral as urgent. If you do not want to add the fee, deselect the Add fee for urgent processing option.
Select Save to submit the referral.
Confirm that the laboratory referral was successfully submitted. See View Laboratory Referrals and Results for referral status descriptions.
